Lin Manuel Miranda, best known for his musical Hamilton, has recently written the music for the new Disney princess movie Moana. One of the songs from Moana, “How Far I’ll Go”, was nominated for “Best Song” in the Oscars. Lin Manuel Miranda had the chance to win an Oscar for this. Despite this song’s popularity, it sadly lost the award to “City of Stars” from La La Land. He has won an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Tony, so if he had won the Oscar he would have won the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony), and he would have become the youngest EGOT winner in history. Other performers such as Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg, and Mel Brooks have won EGOTs, but Lin Manuel Miranda would have been the youngest person in history to win one. Many people are devastated over this loss for Lin Manuel Miranda and Moana. Lin Manuel Miranda, however, does not feel sadness over this and has stated, “There are great works of art that won nothing. And Vincent Van Gogh died penniless. Awards are not a marker of excellence”.
