April 13 is Thomas Jefferson’s birthday! Now you may ask, “Who is Thomas Jefferson?” He was a wealthy Virginian, the Ambassador to France, and America’s first Secretary of State. He was one of the Founding Fathers of our country, America. He wrote the Declaration of Independence, which stated that the United States was declaring their independence from Britain. He played an important role in developing our country after the Revolutionary War (when we went to war with Britain and gained our independence). Thomas Jefferson was also the 3rd President of the United States.

At the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center in Monticello, celebrations are held on Jefferson’s birthday to honor this founding father and president. It was to him that we credit our country’s foundations. He shaped America as we know it, and this is why his birthday is a big deal.
