For the month of June, the teacher of the month is the amazingly caring Ms. Lieber! Ms. Lieber is the 1A teacher out of the two 1st grade teachers here at St. Philip the Apostle School. This will be Ms. Lieber’s last year here at St. Philip because she is retiring. Before she left, I had the opportunity to ask her some questions. Down below are her answers:

Question: How long have you been a teacher?
Answer: “Over 35 years, 7 years at Soledad Christian Preschool in San Diego, 4 years at Pacific Oaks Children’s School, and 26 years at St. Philip’s School”

Question: What is your favorite part of being a teacher?
Answer: “Teaching children about God and their Catholic Faith.”

Question: What is your favorite subject to teach?
Answer: “Religion”

Question: Why did you choose to teach 1st graders and not any other grade?
Answer: “I love the children! First Graders are so innocent, full of wonder, and very curious. I love their enthusiasm and their eagerness to learn new things. Everyday is a new adventure, in which there is never a dull moment!!!”

Question: Who is the person you admire the most and why?
Answer: “I admire many people, but if I had to choose just one, it would definitely be my dad! My dad was a man of deep faith, who expressed his love of God, not so much in his words, but in the way he lived. His priorities were God first, then his family, then his work. From a very early age I learned that attending Mass, going to Confession, prayers before meals and at bedtime and saying the Rosary as a family during the month of May, was something that was extremely important to him. He passed these values onto me and for that I will be forever grateful!”

Question: What was your favorite subject growing up in school?
Answer: “Math”

Question: What are your favorite hobbies?
Answer: “Reading, traveling, cooking and watching Notre Dame football.”
Question: Where did you go to school?
Answer: “Assumption Grammar School, Mayfield Senior School, San Diego State University, and Pacific Oaks College”

Question: What is your favorite book and why?
Answer: “That is a really difficult question. I have so many favorites. So right now my favorite is the one I’m reading … That Nothing May Be Lost by Rev. Paul Scalia.”

Question: If you weren’t a teacher, what profession would you choose?
Answer: “Being a mom”

Question: What is your favorite movie?
Answer: “Sound of Music”

Question: Why did you decided to retire?
Answer: “I would like to spend more quality time with Jesus, my family and friends.”

St. Philip is very grateful to have an wonderful teacher like Ms. Lieber teaching at St. Philip. We hope the best for Ms. Lieber in the years to come!
