On Sunday September 17th, Mass was celebrated in honor of Saint Philip the Apostle School’s 90th anniversary. The church was filled with people in the pews and standing in the aisles. Our school began in 1927 and has been teaching students for 90 years, which is quite awhile! In honor of the 90th anniversary, after Mass, there was a large reception in the hall that featured many different things. There were yearbooks from past years, photos of previous 8th grade graduates, and tables were filled with desserts for everyone. There was also a photobooth with a backdrop filled with St. Philip logos.

There is a document of the history of St. Philip called, “Pasadena Convent Closing: An Historical Summary” written by Mary Paulino Crabb, BVM. Here is a summary of our school’s history. Our school began in 1927 and was founded by St. Philip the Apostle Parish. The Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary taught at the school and worked here. The sisters who taught at our school were named, “Sisters Mary Dominica Burke, (superior), Roseline Cash, Wilhelmine Deery, Felicia Donovan, Margaret Francis Flynn, and Gilbert Reagan” (Crabb). The current pastor at that time was named Reverend Daniel O’Connell. After the completion of the school, the first school year consisted of 50 students. Also, St. Philip used to be 1st grade through 8th grade. Today, we are a K-8 school. Unfortunately, Reverend O’Connor passed away 10 years after the founding of the school.

After Fr. O’Connor passed away, Monsignor Thomas O’Regan became pastor. Up until today we have had Reverend Monsignor William North, Reverend Monsignor Carl Gerken, Reverend Monsignor John Clifford Parker, Reverend Monsignor Gary Bauler, and today we have Fr. Joe as the pastor of our church. Throughout the Years, our school has been updated, changed, and today we have such a great community of students and teachers.

Mrs. Ramirez has shared the school’s goals for the future:

(From the Strategic Plan 2017-2023)

  1. “We will develop and implement a plan to create long-term financial stability and eliminate our reliance on current-use issues”
  2. “We will develop and implement a master communications plan for internal and external audiences”
  3. “We will develop and implement a facilities use, maintenance, and expansion plan”
  4. “We will competitively compensate and support our faculty and staff”
  5. “We will maintain and expand our excellent curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular programs”
  6. “We will cultivate partnerships with our parish and the broader community to advance our mission and objectives”

Here are some fun facts about St. Philip the Apostle School:

  1. We used to be called the St. Philip Knights (Today we are the falcons).
  2. The school building we know today was built in 2008.
  3. Holy Angel Hall was built in 2007.
  4. The smallest graduation class was 6 students.
  5. The largest graduating class was 45 students.
  6. Mrs. Ramirez started teaching at St. Philip in 1986
    1. This is her 32nd year at the school

We are blessed to be able take part in the SPAS experience. To another 90 years Falcons!
