8th Grade Element Project

Over the past few months, the eighth grade has been learning about the periodic table of elements in science class. In response to this, the eighth grades were assigned an element project where they could either make a board game, an edible or non edible model of an atom, a decorated kleenex box, or write a song of poem based on the elements. The board game must allow at least 2 players, and the goal of it is to allow the players to become more familiar with the elements, by being asked questions about the history or actual science of the elements. For the model, the students have to design and make a model of an atom of a specific element of their choice; and it must include the correct number of protons and neutrons, as well as the electron configuration. For the kleenex box, students must create a kleenex box based off of an element of their choice that demonstrates facts about that element. The students are also encouraged to find something that represents their element, and add it for decoration. Lastly, for the song or poem students must write a song or poem based on the elements, this will be presented the day the project is due. The eighth graders are coming up with great ideas for their projects. For example, Alexis Perez in 8B will be baking a cake, and frosting the cake to make it look like an atom. Other students, such as Georgio Maroun are making kleenex boxes, and Georgio will be gluing mini tubes of toothpaste to his box, since his element is fluorine. Overall this is a great way for the students to learn the elements, and the students are lucky to have Miss France, who is willing to do this with them
