The Selection

Have you heard of the television series, “The Bachelor”? Then you may be interested in “The Selection” by Kiera Cass, a fantasy book about a dating contest for teens.

The heroine of “The Selection” is a 17-year-old girl named America Singer who lives in the Kingdom of Illea. Illea is very segregated. It has eight different levels of society, and America is on level seven — one of the lowest. She is in love with a boy named Aspen, who is on level eight. Aspen suggests that America enter a contest named the Selection to escape her caste in society. In that contest, Illea’s prince, Maxon, picks 35 girls randomly. The girls perform a series of tests to see who the prince will want to marry. America doesn’t especially want to enter the Selection but she thinks it will help her family with their problems. She gets chosen and ventures on her journey through the Selection. But what if America falls in love with Maxon on the way?

I loved following America through her tests, and I especially loved waiting to see how the contestants would be eliminated. The tests were entertaining. America is a great character, who is intelligent and level-headed. If you like this one, America’s adventures continue through two more books. Check it out today!
