The Game Awards are an annual awards show that celebrates all of the best games of the year. There are many different awards that are handed out at the event, and there are also many announcements about the game community made (new games are announced, updates are announced, etc.). For this article, I will be covering the biggest events that occured at The Game Awards 2018.

  1. Game of the Year

The nominees for this year’s Game of the Year award were the following:

  1. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
  2. Celeste
  3. God of War
  4. Marvel’s Spider-Man
  5. Monster Hunter: World
  6. Red Dead Redemption 2

God of War took the number one spot this year. It is the latest entry in the critically acclaimed God of War series. This year’s Game of the Year winner follows Kratos (the protagonist) and his son, Atreus, on a mission to spread Atreus’s mother, Laufey’s, ashes on the highest peak in the nine realms. This game transitioned from the classic God of War setting (Greek mythology), to a theme of Norse mythology.

  1. Best Ongoing Game

The nominees for this award were:

  1. Destiny 2: Forsaken
  2. Fortnite
  3. No Man’s Sky
  4. Overwatch
  5. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege

It isn’t to hard to guess which game won this category. Fortnite won, and it isn’t much of a surprise. This game has been going extremely well this year, arguably even better than last year (when it launched).

  1. Mortal Kombat 11

The Mortal Kombat franchise is extremely popular, and the announcement of the next game in the series was very surprising. This game will release on April 23, 2019.

  1. The Outer Worlds

From the creators of Fallout, Obsidian Entertainment, comes The Outer Worlds, a probably great mix of Fallout, Borderlands, and maybe even Star Wars. The trailer was great, and it seems that this game will crack players up. The aesthetic of the game seems to be sort of a retro-but-future look. The game is set on the, according to the trailer, “edge of the galaxy, (sic) the frontier of space.” I can’t wait to check this game out!

  1. Atlas

This game comes from the same makers of the popular Ark: Survival Evolved. Atlas will be an “open-world survival MMO,” loaded with pirates, mythical beasts, knights, and some pretty sick bar fights. This game is going to be available for early access on PC very soon, and it will be an Xbox One preview game in 2019.

This year’s Game Awards were pretty great, though I’m still disappointed we didn’t get any news on the next Rocksteady game. You can rewatch The Game Awards (in 4k!) below:
