Introducing Mr. Barlaan

Hello Falcons! Hope you are staying safe during these troubling times. Quick to respond, Mr. Barlaan joined the St. Philip staff as a new Jr. High math teacher. Finally, after a year of meeting new students and faculty, he’s finally receiving an official introduction.

Jason Barlaan grew up here in Pasadena and attended St. Philip, just like you! Mr. Barlaan went to multiple colleges including UC Santa Barbara, Del Arte School of Physical Theatre, California Institute of the Arts, and CalState Los Angeles! He later served in the Marine Corps for 6 years, where he still holds a Top Secret Clearance from it! Afterwards, he moved onto teaching. Before returning to St. Philip to teach, he taught Algebra and English at Pasadena High School and co-directed a theatre course showing “Agamemnon”.

Mr. Barlaan is married to his wife and has two kids, a 5 year old named Isaiah and a 9 month old named Shiloh. His favorite movies are the Batman Trilogy and the Lion King, and his favorite book is the Art of War by Sun Tzu. His role model is his future self once he achieves all of his goals. If he could have any other career, it would be to be a Franciscan. His favorite sport to play is basketball while he likes to watch baseball and basketball.

Many of you may not know this, but Mr. Barlaan is an actor! He has been a guest star on a TV show called SWAT and made an appearance on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, after he claimed the famous comedian made a mistake. He has also done a commercial for the Navy Federal where he jumps out a plane and even shot a scene with Scarlett Johansson for the movie Ghost in the Shell! Unfortunately, the director removed that scene, but still that’s amazing! Additionally from Mr. Barlaan growing up here, he lived in the brown apartment behind St. Philip with his grandmother! She still lives there so if you see her say hi!

Many students love Mr. Barlaan teaching here and so far he has been an amazing part of the faculty here! We hope Mr. Barlaan stays on the St. Philip staff for a long time!
