The Adventures of Taco and Cheeseburger Ch. 25

By Lindsey Michelena & Maria Yniguez

Dr. Turman comes back out. “I’ve finished. None of the operations that I have in my large book of operations have a chance of saving him. So I combined a few. I’ve never done that before, but then again, I’ve never had a case as serious as Dante’s. We have nothing to lose-I mean, none of the other operations can save him, so if this doesn’t work, nothing will.” Alison and Ramses aren’t sure whether to feel reassured or scared. “Is-is it yet? Is he n-no longer safe?” asks Alison. “He is still safe,” says Dr. Turman calmly. “There are no signs of his body…slowing down. Don’t worry, I’ll tell you when he is starting to-you know…” Ramses nods. Dr. Turman continues. “You can leave now. Don’t worry, Dante will be fine. I mean, he will continue to live until…you know what, I’ll come get you guys if there’s any sign of…suspicious behavior in his body. So you can leave, just try to stay close.” They leave, but Ramses and Alison are a bit hesitant. Dr. Turman nods at the girls, and they follow the others out. They walk around for a while, but they don’t go too far. Suddenly, Laurence says, “Look! I think I just saw Hemingway!” They chase him around until they get pretty far from the hospital. “I think we should go back,” says Cheeseburger, sensing that Ramses and Alison want to say that exact same thing. “But we’ll lose Hemingway!” cries Garroth. “I guess we should stay close.” Taco sees Hemingway peek out of a bush. Without saying anything, she runs towards it. Cheeseburger runs after her. Hemingway runs farther, followed by Taco and Cheeseburger. The others aren’t sure what to do. Dr. Turman runs to them, out of breath. “I-need-to-tell-you-visit-Dante-dying-now-hurry!” They run to the hospital, seeming to get the message. Taco glares at Hemingway, then follows the others. They enter Dante’s room without invitation, followed by Dr. Turman. He says, “His breathing is slowing down drastically. I think…I think it’s time.” Ramses and Alison cry again. “What do we do now?” asks Alison. “Just wait. And treasure each precious moment that you have with Dante being…alive. Because at this rate, Dante will be dead in just a few minutes.” Finally, Cheeseburger starts to cry. “I-I’m sorry. I can’t help it…Dante was-is-a friend, and…” Taco struggles to keep calm. She thinks, It’s okay, even though Dante’s dying, and he was our close friend and guard… She starts crying. Everything’s over now, thinks Alison. She stares at Dante and waits for it to happen. No…..no. This can’t be happening. Dante… Ramses thinks. Nothing happens. “D-Doctor Turman, w-what’s ha-happening? I th-thought you s-said h-h-he w-was-” Alison is unable to finish.
