Christmas is celebrated worldwide with unique traditions that reflect local culture and history. In Colombia, La Noche de las Velitas on December 7th honors Mary, with streets illuminated by thousands of small candles. In Japan, an interesting but beloved tradition involves having KFC for Christmas dinner, a custom that started in the 1970s thanks to a marketing campaign. In Iceland, people exchange books on Christmas Eve in a tradition called Jólabókaflóð, or the “Christmas Book Flood,” and many spend the evening reading together. Italy celebrates the Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve, where families gather to enjoy seven types of seafood, symbolizing the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. In Iceland, children look forward to the Yule Lads, a tradition similar to the elf on the shelf. 13 mischievous figures visit homes during the 13 days leading up to Christmas. Each Yule Lad has his playful trait, such as stealing butter or slamming doors, and leaves gifts for well-behaved children—or a potato for those who misbehave. These traditions show the diversity of Christmas celebrations around the world, each adding its special touch to this beautiful, beloved, and jolly holiday. Merry Christmas everyone.
