Jorge Gabriel Cham is an engineer-turned-cartoonist, writer, and producer who writes the Piled Higher and Deeper web comic strip. On April 2nd, he came to visit us to tell us a gross secret: the earth is a big… barfer! Before elaborating on that secret, he told us a little about his books. His books, Oliver’s Great Big Universe and the sequel, Oliver’s Great Big Universe: Volcanoes are Hot!, are all about science and our world, with funny comics and cartoons to accompany them. He then told us a story about Oliver, the main character in the books. To make the story complete, he chose a volunteer from the audience to draw a picture so he could add it to the story. The story was about how Oliver and his two best friends were at lunch, and one of his friends, Sven, ate ten cherry cobblers and then, and then, he threw up! Oliver was horrified! Everyone was laughing at him and Sven. He then explained what he meant by the Earth is a big barfer. Volcanoes are like the mouths of the earth, and every once and a while, they barf up liquid rock called magma. His visit was very fun and educational, and we all had a lot of fun.
