In May 2025, Caltech launched a new construction plan to build a research facility on the hardly used parking lot next to our school’s parking lot and the parish office. This construction plan is still in review of Pasadena City, but our school is not okay with that.
Currently, the Caltech Construction is waiting to be approved by the city, and Principal Ramirez isn’t too worried. She says that we should always be good neighbors and hopes that the new building will not be too big and that it would fit the community well. However, she thinks that the tall building would overpower the church visually. Even though the research facility plans only shows about 5 stories, research facilities stories are usually taller than the normal story height, which would both overpower the church visually and also block the nice view of the mountains that Principal Ramirez enjoys. Some other concerns about the construction are that the construction equipments, such as the cranes, would cause a lot of noise to the school, especially the T-K students. Also, Principal Ramirez thinks that the dust and debris that comes out of the construction would affect the students very much, even though Caltech said that they would do certain procedures to prevent the dust.
Overall, Principal Ramirez states that “I admire Caltech, and we want to be good neighbors”. Her greatest concern is that the new research facility wouldn’t fit with the overall mood and style of the community.
