The Varsity Girls ended their season. Their season concluded with a loss to St. Benedict, 38-8, on Sunday. The Falcons had a successful  season as they finished 5-1 in the East Foothill League and went 2-1 in the playoffs. St. Benedict advanced to the Final Four after going undefeated in the Mission League (a strong league with one team that advanced to the second round and another that advanced to the Sweet 16, along with St. Benedict). Falcons’ lone league loss was against Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (ABVM or Assumption BVM), on ABVM’s home court. Assumption advanced to the second round of the CYO tournament, where they lost, while St. Rita, the third place team in the East Foothill League also fell in the second round. Holy Angels lost in the first round after finishing fourth in the East Foothill League.

The Girls Varsity had to play at Ramona High School and St. Mary’s Academy, while other East Foothill League schools had a much shorter drive to La Salle High School.

The Boys Varsity also faced off with their St. Benedict counterpart, at Cantwell-Sacred Heart on Wenesday. This game had a much different outcome than the game between the schools’ Girls Varsity teams, as the Varsity Boys won 36-28. After scoring the first pair of baskets of the game for a 4-0 lead, St Benedict’s scored the next eleven points, taking an 11-4 lead with seven minutes left in the first half. St. Philip scored the next six points, and both teams scored a few more points, going into the half with St. Benedict up by two, 13-11.

The second half was more even in the spread of scoring, but the lead was still being exchanged before the Falcons took the lead for good with two minutes left. With a minute and a half left in the game, St. Benedict’s was forced to foul intentionally and hope that the visitors missed their free throws, but St. Philip extended their lead, and their lead grew from six with a minute left to the final eight point margin at 36-28.

St. Benedict’s Boys Varsity went undefeated in the Mission League, winning their league, just as their Girls Varsity did.

On Monday, the Falcons blew out ICS as the scoreboard was turned off, and a few JV players who were watching the game were able to join in on the action. The JV team played against Holy Angels (the Varsity team) after Holy Angels forfeited on Wednesday, but Holy Angels blew out the JV team.

The Falcons went 10-0 in the Foothill League, along with four wins each in two tournaments and their win over St. Benedict, to finish with an overall record of 19-0 in the regular season. In the St. Rita tournament, the Falcons beat the other two top teams in the league. The playoff bracket will be announced this Wednesday, 2/19.
