The Greatness of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is one of the best holidays of the year. Not only is the purpose of the holiday great, the celebration of the holiday is also great. Most people (myself included) celebrate Thanksgiving with their families, many of whom they do not visit regularly. There is also great food, especially the pies.

Thanksgiving is a way to give thanks to God, and its origin was the pilgrims. Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday, and was declared to be on the fourth Thursday of November in 1941 by President Franklin Roosevelt. Thanksgiving’s placement is also nearly perfect, being placed before the deluge of winter hollidays that cause some burnout, and is at the perfect time when the weather is cooling off but is not frigid, the perfect weather in my mind.

Thanksgiving is a great holiday largely because it is  a great way to see your family members. I celebrate Thanksgiving with family members that I only see five times a year or so, and many other people also see family members that they only see a few times a year. At Thanksgiving, relatives can also talk to each other at length without worrying about having to accomplish anything else, something that rarely happens in other times during the year.

Thanksgiving also has great food. In my family, we cook a turkey, and have mashed potatoes, green beans, and many other great sides. After the main meal come the pie, the greatest desert. My family cooks a great variety of pie; pumpkin, apple, and pecan.

Even after Thanksgiving, there are still holidays to look forward to, especially Christmas and New Years Day (and the Tournament of Roses). There is not as much of a holiday letdown, such as the letdown that follows Christmas.
