Boys Varsity takes third, Girls Varsity wins first game

Over the last weekend before Christmas Break (and the week before), Boys Varsity basketball finished third in the Don Bosco Technical Institute tournament. They entered as the two-time defending champions, but fell in the semifinals against American Martyrs. The last Tuesday before break, Girls Varsity beat Holy Family, 30-15 to begin their season.

Boys Varsity won the tournament last year, and the previous year, but the quality of the teams in the tournament was much higher than in previous years. They began with a pair of 52-24 wins in games where the Falcons took the lead early, and never faltered, to advance to the semifinals. Then, in the semifinal, the Falcons met American Martyrs, just a few weeks off of their 56-24 victory over St. Rita in the flag football final. The Falcons never had the lead, and fell from down 8 at halftime to a 62-18.  final in favor of American Martyrs. In the third place game, the Falcons blew out St. Rita, building up a 20 point advantage before halftime and coasting to a 48-20 victory. Kento Denapoli and Paul Hawkins were named to the all-tournament team for the Falcons. After the St. Philip victory in the third place game, American Martyrs jumped out to an large lead early, fell back to within two points, then came alive again en route to a large margin of victory.

Girls Varsity beat Holy Family in a game that was close at halftime, before the Falcons clamped down on defense and pulled away in the second half. Holy Family was called for many fouls, but stayed close in the first half, going into halftime with the Falcons up by just four at 16-12. In the second half, the Falcons gave up just three points while scoring fourteen, and won easily.
