It’s the beginning of the year, and the transition to a new grade is not easy. Preparation and hard work is always a key thing to succeeding in Junior High. As a 7th grader, I would like to give out tips for a memorable Junior High year, especially for the 6th graders.

  1. To expect good grades, don’t be afraid of hard work. Learn what the teacher wants from you and be sure to meet, if not exceed, their expectations.
  2. Always follow directions and listen carefully. This may seem like a no-brainer, but it is definitely vital and probably one of the most important tips.
  3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Teachers are there to help, and they are probably the best resource you have available. However, be sure to reach out with a reliable classmate first to make sure your question is a good one.
  4. Focus in class. Goofing off and talking to your friends should only be done at the right time, preferably recess and lunch. The teachers take into account behavior and participation as well.
  5. Take good notes. Write down a lot of what the teacher says. It may be tedious and difficult, but you’ll thank yourself in the end when a test comes up and you have something to study with.
  6. Work efficiently. Know what to study and what information is the most important. This will save you a lot of time and reduce the stress.
  7. Turn in your work. Turn it in on time! Even if it is late, do not hesitate to turn in your work. Teachers may change your grade if you have a good reason. An F is always better than an NC and does not have as great of a negative impact when it comes to your overall grade.
  8. Lastly, have fun! The teachers do have their funny sides, and are wonderful people to meet and talk to. Enjoy your learning experience.

I interviewed a 6th grader, Cordell Johnson, on his experience so far.
