Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in Film/Industry

This week’s edition of pop culture is something a little different: we are going to be celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month and Hispanic representation in film industry and entertainment! National Hispanic Heritage month spans from September 15 to October 15 where people celebrate the group’s heritage and culture.

American culture has evolved so much to be inclusive of all races (or at least try to). Here are two amazing examples of Hispanic representation in the pop culture and film industry which go to show how far Latino/a tv stars have come and succeeded since the start of the television.

Elena of Avalor is a show on the DIsney channel about a Latina princess who ‘don’t need no man.’ Elena is courageous and must fight back to regain her kingdom from an evil sorceress named Shuriki. Once she succeeds, Elena must also find out how to rule the kingdom and her subjects with success. Tony Morales, a Latino film and TV composer, writes songs in “ultra competitive Hollywood” for the Elena of Avalor TV show. He adds Latina flair by mixing authentic Spanish music style for songs in the show. Morales states that he implements “traditional Latin and Hispanic heritage tones into the music” while still keeping the “Disney enchantment feeling.” Through his hard work, kids all over the country are able to learn the beautiful Hispanic culture and also enjoy their TV time.

Next for Hispanic Heritage month are Latino star cooks who are featured on a variety of tv cooking shows.

These cooks are extremely accomplished and are very successful, such as Chef José Mendín from Miami who owns a variety of restaurant chains like Pubbelly, which fuses Asian/Hispanic food, and Barceloneta. Another famous cook is Daniela Soto-Innes from New York City. She has been taking cooking classes since she was just 5 years old in Mexico! In addition, she’s won the James Beard Rising Star Chef award for her talent.

In America’s great melting pot, or as some refer now to as a salad bowl, cultures are indeed mixing together so that all unique lifestyles can still be celebrated and accepted. When Latin/Hispanic cultures are celebrated, America’s tolerance and love for diversity flourishes. Today we continue to flourish as one united country, no matter how persistently anyone attempts to tear this union apart. Let’s treasure our identity and ethnicity! Happy Hispanic Heritage month!
