Hallway Traffic

The Junior High hallway at St. Philip the Apostle school has become increasingly problematic. Trying to fit almost 200 people in a small, narrow hallway is very hard, and for some people very stressful. However, this crowded hallway is only like this when students switch classes every hour, and of course when the students go to recess or lunch. This system would benefit from a change to give students less anxiety, and I have thought of a few ideas on how to change this situation.

The main reason that students find this hallway stressful is because of its capacity. As I mentioned earlier, the hallway tries to fit about 200 students all at once. As I speak from 3 years of experience, these hallways are indeed very crowded. People are trying to get to one class to another, a book from a class, or even just to say hello to their favorite teacher. The reason I feel that this hallway is too crowded is because its space. Most junior highs have an entire campus, not one hallway. Trying to fit all of these people in one little hallway, all at once, is unreasonable.

But what really makes the hallway stressful is what goes on in the hallway. It’s not just a place for people to switch classes, but to socialize. There are many people running up and down the hallway to say hello to one another, talking to each other, screaming, and even dropping their books. This hallway just has too much going on!

The hallway traffic in junior high can be easily avoided without having to switch campus. I, like many other junior high students are tired of the traffic and have multiple solutions. Starting with time. If the sixth, seventh, and eighth graders all got out at different times, this traffic could be minimized. The junior high hallway also lacks order. If one of the teachers made the students stay on the wall, the hallway would be very less cramped. Finally, another solution is to have all the classes come out at the same time, or as I previously mentioned, at different times. If the students get out at the same time, the students can be in and out in almost no time, avoiding traffic. If the grades get out at different times, that leaves the rest of the junior high to have a hallway all to themselves. Both are reasonable solutions.

The hallway in the junior high is very narrow and short. It tries to fit 200 students, causing traffic. This could be avoided by changing very simple errors made by people in the hallway everyday. Leaving at the same time, and various other solutions. The hallway causes somes students stress, understandably, and anxiety. The hallway is also a place for students to socialize. The hallway needs a resolution to be put in action.
