Boys Varsity Volleyball Beats St. Rita

The Boys Varsity Volleyball team continued their undefeated season with a 2-1 victory over St. Rita. The victory over St. Rita was the only game of the three so far (in the five-game season) that Boys Varsity did not win in straight sets (straight sets at this level of volleyball means a 2-0 win). The Falcons almost came back from a 16-3 deficit in the first set to win, but after a series of tiebreakers, the Raiders finally had a lead of two points at 26-24 (volleyball rules are that to win a set, the team has to have a lead of two or more and score more than 21).

The team is made up of all eighth graders, though that was the way that the team turned out, not because of any rule. Most of those eighth graders have played volleyball all three years of eligibility for volleyball (boys can only play volleyball in junior high). Several eighth graders are considering trying out for freshman volleyball at their high schools next. There is also a junior varsity boys volleyball team that is mostly made up sixth and seventh graders.

The Falcons are the only team still undefeated in the five-team East Foothill League for CYO, and gave second-place Holy Family their only loss of the season, 2-0, in the only two sets that Holy Family has lost all season. They have two games remaining, the first a rematch of San Gabriel Mission 0n April 1st (who the Falcons beat 2-0 earlier in the season), and the second against Holy Angels on May 6th, a team that is 0-2 after playing Holy Family and St. Rita’s, the second and third place teams in the East Foothill League.
