Kids/Teens/Elders/YouTubers React: The Perception of Real People
Let’s face it; the Internet is a vast and scary place, and it’s easy to get lost there. You might stare at your screen sometimes, wondering, “Am I the only one who finds this more than a little bit weird?” Or perhaps you’re an excited fan, who is absolutely gushing about their cause, and thinks, “There has to be other people out there who think like I do!” Funnily enough, the precise place to find these answers is where the questions were found; on the Internet. Or, more specifically, on a particular YouTube channel called TheFineBros, or Fine Brothers Productions. Though this channel engages in several types of film and video, one of their most popular series are the “React” videos. In these videos, the Fine Brothers (whose names are Benny and Rafi Fine) show kids, teenagers, or elders a certain video that has been suggested by their audience. These videos can be a multitude of different things, such as a certain person, a commercial, a movie trailer, a political video, etc. The kids, teens, and elders are then filmed watching the video, with a small box in the corner so the viewer may see the same video they are seeing. This makes it so the Fine Brothers may capture their first reaction to the video or certain parts of the video. After that, the Fine Bros then ask those reacting a series of question pertaining to the video.
More recently, the Fine Brothers have also been asking YouTubers to participate in this practice, and this has been turned into a similar video series under the title of “YouTubers React”. The videos work in the same way as the kids/teens/elders react, and the main difference is who reacts to the content. In this way, the viewer may also see how those creating content react to the content of others. It is also interesting to see how YouTubers in different genres of film react to the certain video they are shown.
Among the four groups (kids, teens, elders, and YouTubers) the videos shown can differ greatly. Most of the series is rather light and funny, but there are certain times when the Fine Brothers will chose to show those reacting something more serious. These videos always come with a warning beforehand to the viewer, as to make clear that the video ahead will be on a serious topic. Topics such as bullying and gay rights stand under the “serious” section, and they are often shown to the people who they will affect. For instance, the topic of bullying was introduced to the teens, and they were shown a video in which a girl confesses her experiences. Bullying is prominent in teens today, and I imagine the Fine Bros showed this video to their teens as a way to raise awareness. The gay rights topic was shown to the kids, and I feel as though this might surprise some. After all, the subject of gay rights has been received in a number of different ways among adults, and so showing children such a heavy topic might have been a shock. However, I feel as though this was not a wrong thing to do. This video was meant to, once again, raise awareness, and also demonstrate how our next generation feels about such a topic. The videos on the more serious topics may not be as funny as the usual videos, but they do help to represent the thought and feeling of the general public.
Whether you’re looking for a bit of fun or rather something serious to ponder on, the React videos are a wonderful source to turn to. I find it fun to compare my own opinions with those who are reacting, and see the way I feel about certain topics after discussion. In a way, you can also participate, by answering the questions in your head, and seeing if any of your own answers surprise you. Whatever you chose to view, remember that it is all in good humor, and the opinions presented don’t necessarily have to mirror your own.
