Falcons Win Meet Again

Last Sunday, the track and field team won the Knights of Columbus meet at Damien High School. The Falcons won the meet handily, the second consecutive meet with such a result. They won both Novice Girls and the Novice Boys divisions, and were second in Varsity Girls, Varsity Boys, and B Boys. B Girls, which has the fewest runners of the six Falcon track divisions, placed fourth. The meet was a typical track meet, in contrast to the prior week’s Phantom Relays, which was (unsurprisingly) composed completely of relays.

The Knights of Columbus meet has a reputation for falling behind schedule, and this year’s meet was no exception. Each of the events was scheduled to take a half hour to run through all six divisions, but several of the early events took much longer, including the 200 meter race, which took approximately two hours from start to finish.

The day of the meet set several temperature records across Southern California, even forcing the LA Marathon to start 30 minutes earlier than scheduled in an attempt to avoid some of the heat. The track meet made no such attempt. The meet began at 9:00, when the temperature was just below 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The high for the day was 97 degrees Fahrenheit, which occurred at about 2:30, during the meet.
