Girls Softball, Boys Volleyball Begin

The start of spring sports has had mixed results for St. Philip athletics. The Falcons have won several track meets (including their own-the Falcon Invitational) and won a softball game. The Falcon have lost one game each in softball and volleyball in two games that were not very close.

Girls softball began the year with a defeat against St. Rita. The game was cut short due to the mercy rule. In their second game, the Falcons won 13-8 against St. Andrew. The Falcons have just four games this year, with games remaining against San Gabriel Mission (on March 30) and Holy Angels (on April 14), their usual league foes. All of their league game are held at Holy Angels, the only school in the Foothill League with a softball field.

Boys Varsity Volleyball opened with a loss to Holy Angels. The Falcons lost the first game, 25-14; won the second, 25-14; and lost the last game 15-8. This was their first league game loss in over a year. Last year, the Falcons went undefeated in league play on the way to third place in CYO.

Girls softball did well last year, finishing fourth in their league. They won two games, lost three games, and tied one game. Their start shows a chance for better season this year than last year. Boys Volleyball’s start dooms any chance of equaling last year’s league record, and they would need to go far in the playoffs to approach last year’s team.
