St. Philip the Apostle Students Successful in Falcon’s Meet
In a meet held jointly by St Philip the Apostle School and Pasadena City College, St. Philip won all divisions entered in, winning third, fourth, and fifth grade boys, third, fourth, and fifth grade boys (both with a perfect score of 15), sixth, seventh, and eighth grade boys, and sixth, seventh, and eighth grade girls. The event took place at the Brookside Golf Course, near the world-famous Rose Bowl Stadium. The younger grades ran one kilometer (about 0.62 miles), while the older grades ran two kilometers (about one and a quarter miles). After the St. Philips races finished, there was a high school race (including at least one St. Philip alumnus), a community race (with several coaches participating), and a university race, composed mostly of college students.
The third, fourth, and fifth grade girls had a perfect score of 15 points with the highest placer, Emma Gunn, at third place in 4 minutes, 7.97 seconds, closely followed by Natalie Miera in fourth place, at 4 minutes, 9.49 seconds. Not far behind, with a time of 4:14.96, was Jessica Albino, in fifth place. In ninth place was Roxy Key at 4:25.82, followed immediately by Maddie Napierala at 4:28.36, who in turn was immediately in front of Anwen Wise, at 4:28.86. Just missing out of a medal at 16th place was Vanessa Covarrubias, with Noel Chua and Campbell Buffington at 18th and 19th, respectively. Also doing well were Lauren Pithy, Caroline Mitchell, Chloe Clawson, and Trinity Smith.
The third, fourth, and fifth grade boys also had a perfect score of 15 points, led by Mark Valenzuela, finishing in second with a time of 3 minutes and 42.36 seconds. Anthony Mierra finished in sixth, followed immediately by Joseph Blain, Jacob Koch, Will Dakan, Timothy Parisi, Quinnten Guzman, and Henry Gunn in that order, all of whom achieved medals. Behind them were Marcus Powe, Franklin Batiste, Christopher Tom, Zachary Bowles, and Noah Fleischman.
While varsity did not post a perfect score, a varsity runner won both races. Arielle Guzman, with a time of 6:55.06, won the 6, 7, and 8th grade race, followed by Katerina Placensia and Agnese Sanavio, at 7:39.38 and 7:46.54, respectively taking eighth and ninth place. After them, in twelfth and thirteenth place were Maggie Keichler (7:53.46) and Alyssa Bruno (7:55.82) rounding out the St. Philip medalists. Next were Ella Blain at seventeenth, with Heather Palomino, Ellie Kiechler, Grace Tighe, Keanna Lazaro, Ellie Parisi, and Lauren Clauson spread out after her.
Jonathan Martinez won the boys Varsity race, with a time of 6:06.43, at a pace of about 4:55 per mile. After him were Paul Hawkins (7:11.72) and Adrian Alvarez (7:11.74), separated by just four hundredths of a second between each other for seventh and eighth. Only about five seconds back was Stuart Serventi in tenth place at 7:16.27, followed by a clump led by Nico Ciranna at 7:27.41 in thirteenth, Charlie Gilb at 7:34.31, and Jake Powe at 7:37.46 to round out those who medaled. Mitchell Valine and Marcos Vargas were not very far behind that clump of three, followed by John Wells.
It is not too late for anyone to join Cross Country. Practices are on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:15 to 6:15 at the Rose Bowl, on the large grass field outside of the entrance to the stadium. Some Saturdays, there is practice at either the Arroyo Seco or Eaton Canyon, depending on the week and if there is a meet near the weekend. The weekday practices begin near the baseball backstop on the corner nearest to the stadium. Be sure to check the schedule on the school web site to make sure that the time has not changed, as the time will change due to the sun setting earlier and earlier.
