On September 23rd the first St. Philp sport seasons officially kicked off for the year. The varsity football team started the year off well beating St. Bernard on their home field near the border with Eagle Rock. The final score was 16-6 and St. Philips came out victorious. This is what star safety and running back Matt O’Connor had to say about the win “It was a great team win, everybody contributed and it was a lot of fun. We’re going to keep building and getting better throughout the season”. Julian Yniguez led on the defensive end getting multiple sacks giving the St. Bernard quarterback no time in the pocket. Jake Paulus played quarterback, scoring one touchdown and throwing to Nate Vanis for the other. The varsity girls volleyball team also started off well winning their first game against Holy Angels 2-0. St. Philip hosted the game in their Holy Angle Hall. This brought a big St. Philips crowd and the crowd was energetic. Middle blocker Cadence Bembi Mcrary said “At the start of the first game we were very jittery and nervous, but soon we got really good at resorting to what we were taught in practice and started to roll. We were also very good at encouraging each other and helping build each other up.” We are excited for a good upcoming season of St. Philip sports and are looking forward to the upcoming games and seasons.
