Divergent: The Movie

Imagine a world where everyone centers their life around their one and only trait. A world where breaking out of the status-quo is not allowed, and those who try are hunted down and killed. You have to choose one of five characteristics to value above all else; selflessness, bravery, honesty, intelligence, or tranquility. Once you have chosen, there is no going back, and there are no second chances. This is the world Beatrice Prior finds herself in, and is the basis for the novel Divergent.

Recently, the critically acclaimed and well-loved book Divergent by Veronica Roth was used as a base for the film Divergent. This film, though not entirely faithful to its namesake book, gave those who hadn’t read the book a glimpse into Roth’s riveting world, while it gave those who had something to look forward to. This film also featured actors and actresses such as Shailene Woodley, who played Beatrice (Tris) Prior in the film. (For the full casting list, please see the link pasted below.

From a personal standpoint, I feel as though this film has people on both ends of the opinion spectrum. Many people who had read the book felt as though the movie was lacking development in several areas, and also missed important elements that would affect later books. Along with this, they felt as though the film changed things in unnecessary ways, which only worked to jumble the true plot of the book. On the other side, there were some people who found that they liked the movie even more so than the book. They found this interpretation of the book to be captivating, and appreciated the changes. As for the rest, many simply enjoyed the movie for what is was. In my opinion, I did enjoy the movie as a movie, but I did feel disappointed at the differences. I felt as though they could have stuck to the book better, and that they could have taken more time to develop the characters. Anyhow, it was still something I enjoyed watching, and overall I feel as though they did a nice job.

As mentioned before, Divergent was a book before it was a movie. If I could give you one piece of advice should you see the movie, it would be to read the book first. Reading the book before seeing the movie is always better in my opinion, and makes the experience all the more enjoyable. It will also give you a better understanding of the plot and the characters in the movie. Another aspect I find fun is seeing how closely the movie follows the book; this is even more entertaining when one has friends they can discuss the movie with afterwards.

Overall, I would highly recommend going to see Divergent. It’s a fun movie to watch, and a great excuse to get together with your friends.
