The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is a heart touching story of a boy and a tree. As a kid, the boy would climb the tree, collecting leaves to weave into crowns and picking apples. The tree was happy. Then, the boy grew older, and asked the tree if she had money. She told him to take her apples and sell them. Later in life, he returned and said he wanted to build a house for his family, to which the tree offered her branches. Finally, after some more time, the tree gives him her trunk to build a boat. When the boy has grown into an old man, he revisits his tree, who is a mere stump. The tree is sad she has nothing left to give him, but he just leans against her, and they are happy. The moral of the story is friendship and how you would do anything for a friend’s happiness. The Giving Tree is Shel Silverstein’s most beloved book, and for good reason.
