The Hour of Code
The week of December 8, 2014 was designated computer science week, and for the second consecutive year, every class participated in the Hour of Code.
St. Philip students generally seemed to enjoy the Hour of Code. Brennan Lee, a second grader, said that he and his class enjoyed the Hour of Code. Kindergartener William Javelera said that he and his class would be happy if St. Philip participated in the hour of code again next year. Computer science week fell on the same week as parent-teacher conferences, which meant that some classes did not do the Hour of Code until the week that began with December 15, including 2B.
The Hour of Code is a widespread event, with nearly 91 million people in over 180 countries spread throughout the world participating. There were well more than 100 Hour of Code events on all six inhabited continents, with the greatest concentration in the United States and Europe (especially Italy and the British Isles). Anyone can sign up for an event, which seems to be defined as a group of people doing the hour of Code together, whether as a school, or other type of group. St. Philip was among the 6,179 Hour of Code events in California, and one of 2,193 California schools that staged whole-school Hour of Code, part of the 14,331 schools that did so in US. There were 37,924 Hour of Code events in the US, and 57,657 world-wide.
