Should we have summer homework?

Children all across St. Philip the Apostle School always dread the idea of summer homework. After all, summer time is supposed to be a break from all of the stress from school that the students have to undergo throughout the school year. We know many kids always stress over completing this summer homework task, for it counts as our first grade of the school year in that particular subject. However, while there may not be kids who stress over summer homework,  they usually just try to get it over with and do not actually have more knowledge about the specific subject. Summer homework could take away time spent with family and friends and especially family, because during the school year, you don’t interact with them as much because students are at school all day and then come home to complete homework and after school activities. Summer is supposed to be a time to relax, have a fun time, and to just be happy. However, we wanted to see if other students shared the same opinion as us, so we decided to survey two kids from each grade which include, incoming sixth graders, seventh graders, and eighth graders, here are their thoughts. Camilo Torres in fifth grade said that he disagreed with having to do homework over the summer because it takes away family time and that he never remembers anything from it. He believes that we should not have summer homework. Another fifth grader, by the name of Hannah Sherman, disagrees with Camilo and says that summer homework does benefit us and that we should continue this tradition. Both sixth graders, Mason Pereira and Celeste Perez did agree with Hannah by saying that summer homework does in fact help us, but don’t think it’s needed. On the other hand, Grace Kelley and Gabriel Ruiz stated that they strongly dislike summer homework and in no way benefits them because it is just a review and they don’t actually try. In conclusion, a majority of the kids agreed with the fact that summer homework should be eliminated.
