In this article, I will be talking about our former pastor Father Joe. Father Joe was the pastor of our church for 20 years. He was born in 1941 and died in 2024 because of cancer. Father Joe was ordained to the priesthood when he was 22 years old. He was fluent in 3 languages; English, Spanish, and Portuguese. In 1966 he came to California for graduate school at Loyola Marymount University. Father Joe often did the 12:30 Spanish mass here at St. Philip. Under Father Joe, a plan was completed. The plan was the Capital Campaign which raised 15 million dollars for the school. The funds helped to build Holy Angel Hall. A year later renovations were made to the school, and construction started to build a new state-of-the-art building. In June of 2018, Father Joe retired, and a farewell party was held. Father Joe even encouraged Mrs. Ramirez to open a TK program for four-year-old students. Father Joe’s legacy will always be remembered at St. Philips for years to come.
