On October sixth, 2025, we interviewed one of our newest St.Philip staff, Nurse Tomas Morato. Throughout this interview, we got to learn more about him, and if you continue reading this article, you will too. Nevertheless, this is what we asked, and this is what he had to say.
What made you come to St. Philips?
Response: “Okay, so I came to Saint Phillips because I thought it was a very good opportunity to help out students, and it’s a very local school.”
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
Response: “Well, I enjoy helping students when they’re sick or not feeling well to feel better, so when I see them get better, then I feel rewarded knowing that they’re going to complete the day with no difficulty. You know, I always just had some type of passion about just wanting to help out students.”
What inspired you to join the medical field?
Response: “You know, I don’t know, I think I probably had injuries growing up, and I thought it was pretty neat that nurses and doctors just kind of acted very quickly, and they just took care of it really precisely, and I always was just like, “Hey, this is pretty cool” so I followed it and here I am.”
What was your job before joining St.Philip Medical Care?
Response: “I was actually a health assistant at a public school in the Alhambra Unified School District. I was pretty much doing the same thing, just assisting a lot of the students when they’re sick or not feeling well, and yeah, I’m doing pretty much the same thing here as well.”
What do you think of the St.Philip community?
Response: “Oh, everybody’s been welcoming me a lot here. I’m so grateful for all the staff, and the students are very nice, and you know, they’re very encouraging and welcoming to hear. And I am very grateful for you guys, so thank you.”
Who is your current best friend staff at St.Philip?
Response: “Well, so far, I don’t think I really have a best friend staff. I feel like I’m connecting to like the younger grade teachers and the kindergarteners, but I don’t know, maybe we’ll see if I can get a staff best friend.”
What are your current goals at St.Philip?
Response: “Well I want to be able to understand how how the system like the St Philip’s runs cuz it’s so completely different than public school so I want to be able to understand like how things run here and once I’m able to become very fluid or very confident here I think you’re going to see a very like very fluid health assistant just doing things like I was doing before.”
What is your favorite color?
Response: “Oh, it’s going to be blue. When I was younger, I just loved blue because it’s such a cool color. And now here I am wearing blue, and my love for blue hasn’t changed.”
Do you have any pets?
Response: “I do. I have two dogs, one is named Jerry and the other is Jolly. Jerry is a Yorkie Terrier. Jolly is a chihuahua. Jerry is around 3 years, Jolly’s around 9 or 10 years, yeah I just adopted or just picked up Jerry a few months ago, so very new to the family, but yeah.”
What is your favorite food?
Response: “Ooh that’s a tough question, actually, probably the toughest question you’ve asked here so far. I think it’s going to have to be Pizza, a pretty typical answer, but I do like cheese pizza. I also do enjoy vanilla ice cream on the side with it, so yeah.
What are your hobbies?
Response: “You know I really just I enjoy hanging out with my friends so we typically hang out every week and I have like a little exercise group going on and yeah I mean whenever they’re available cuz they have their lives going on you know and we just kind of plan things out and hopefully we can do some fun things going on but I just typically like hanging out with my friends.”
We were very glad we got this opportunity to meet our new nurse, and learn more about him. Based off this interview, we can confirm that our injured students are in good hands! If you ever have the chance, walk on by and welcome the new nurse, and get to know him even more!
