Brainrot. We have all come across the word. If you don’t know, Brainrot is what adolescents are calling their terminology or slang. This includes words such as skibidi, rizz, sigma, selling, 67, and more. It is first used on platforms like Youtube Shorts or TikTok and is spread through schools nationwide. It is commonly used by students.
Schools don’t just include students however. What about the people who educate those students? Do they know these words too? More importantly, can they use these words correctly? These are the questions I sought to answer.
I sent out a survey to all 13 of the Junior High teachers, homeroom and specialist. Out of 13, 12 responded.
This survey contained 11 questions with 10 being multiple choice and 1 being a sentence. I peer reviewed all of these with other students who are fluent in the dialect. These questions asked the respondents to define the words and use them in context. The multiple choice questions were worth 1 point and the sentence was worth 5 points. The total points that one could receive is 15.
No respondents got 15/15. The highest score was 14/15. Six teachers tied for first place. The winners all received a Starbucks gift card for a prize.
The winning teachers were:
Mrs. Behr
Ms. Hawkins
Mrs. Hedgepeth
Mrs. Medina
Mrs. Natalie
Mr. W
This shows that teachers understand this dialect far more than most students think and that they shouldn’t underestimate the faculty that they see everyday. Our teachers listen and we should appreciate them for caring as much as they do.
Overall, the teachers performed much better than I expected, especially with the sentence. While there were some teachers that found this difficult, more than half got a 10 or above. I thank all of the teachers for responding and spending their time on this quiz.
