In 2026, the global population using social media surpassed 5.2 billion people, which is about 64% of the total population of the world. Throughout this global trend of social media, there has been many people opposing social media.
First, to define social media. Social media is internet-based apps and websites that allow users of post, share, comment, and create information in virtual communities. These websites include Instagram, Facebook, X, and Snapchat. However they are made for good use, such as sharing information and to create communities, they can have a negative impact on society, including addiction and privacy problems.
I have interviewed Matteo Camara and Gabrielius Stanevicius on how they use and what they think about social media. For Matteo, he uses about minutes of social media per day, and he only uses Youtube. He think that when it first came out, it had really good intention, but he thinks that not it became a big distraction now. To add on to the negative effects, social media can affect how people think about themselves and increases stress. However, on the other hand, he thinks that if you use it a little bit, it doesn’t really affect your daily life significantly. He also believes that Social Media has just become a part of life and should be accustomed to.
Gabrielius, on the other hand, use two hours of social media a day, and uses Youtube. Despite his usage time, he has a separated opinion on the topic. He thinks that social media can be informative and fun, but it can cause addiction and privacy issues.
Despite many negative sayings, social media has many benefits too. Like we said before, it can be your main source of news and information. Also, it promotes global connectivity and creativity. In conclusion, social media is an aspect of modern life that has many drawbacks as well as benefits.
