Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor is a realistic fictional novel. The story focuses on a young boy named Marty, who finds a stray dog. He immediately falls in love with him and names him Shiloh. However, he learns that Shiloh belongs to his neighbor Judd, who he believes abuses his dogs. He returns Shiloh to his owner, but the dog runs away to Marty’s house, where he hides him. When Shiloh is attacked by a German shepherd, his family finds out and takes him to the doctor. Marty once more must return the dog he’s come to love to Judd, but instead offers to work for him to earn the dog. This story truly shows the bond between a boy and a dog, which is a wonderful thing. When Shiloh is in danger from a bad master, Marty is willing to work for a man he doesn’t like in order to save him. Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor is a memorable novel that’s worth reading.
