President Obama Plans to Close Guantanamo Bay
In the final months of President Obama’s presidency, he has been focused on closing the Guantanamo Bay Prison/Detention Camp, located in Cuba. President Obama has been trying to close down the prison for a while but has not been able to because lawmakers have not received a final draft of his plan. This item is one of the last items on the President’s foreign policy agenda, which is pushing officials to finish this item with urgency.
Many Republicans don’t want Obama to close the prison because of the way it has impacted the fight against terrorists. Guantanamo Bay is used to jail foreign terrorists because American jails are not as secure as Guantanamo Bay. Republicans believe that this prison should stay open because it is a great tool to keep convicts away from American jails.
The biggest obstacle that stands in President Obama’s way is the re-location of the prisoners. If Barack Obama decides to shut down Guantanamo Bay, he would have to relocate hundreds of prisoners to different prisons around the United States. If the prisoners are relocated to the United States there would have to be larger amount of security in each prison due the danger the convicts can cause.
In February, President Obama sent his final plan for the closure of Guantanamo Bay to Congress. In a press conference that President Obama gave, he said “Let us go ahead and close this chapter,” referring to the many years it has taken him to reach this point in the closure of Guantanamo Bay Prison.
