The Lorax by Dr. Seuss

The Lorax by Dr. Seuss

The Lorax by Dr. Seuss is a timeless classic. There is even a movie! The story begins with a young boy visiting the Once-ler who lives in seclusion, asking about where the trees have gone. The man proceeds to tell the boy about how he arrived in a valley full of happy animals and tall Truffula trees. When he chopped down a tree, he summoned the Lorax, a mythical creature who speaks for the trees. Despite the Lorax’s warnings, the Once-ler continued and started a business creating “Thneeds”, the thing that “everyone needs”. Soon factories were made, and the animals’ homes were being destroyed. The Lorax sent them away, and tried to appeal to the Once-ler. At first the Once-ler wasn’t sympathetic, but when the last tree fell, it dawned on him what he had done. The Lorax left, leaving behind only a rock that said, “Unless”. In the present, the Once-ler realizes what the Lorax meant, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, it’s not going to get better. It’s not.” He gives the boy the last Truffula tree seed, and tells him to grow a forest. The Lorax shows great insight on deforestation, and is an eye opener for children everywhere.
