As daylight streaked over the beautiful city of Paris, France on October 19, two motorbikes pulled up to the Louvre, an extremely famous museum known for housing some of the most famous paintings in the world, including the Mona Lisa.

On those motorbikes, two thieves got out and pulled out an extendable ladder. They climbed on the ladder into an exhibit that was under construction while being dressed as construction workers to not raise suspicion.

Security camera footage shows the thieves smashing displays and grabbing jewelry before making a hasty escape. The jewelry suspected to be stolen dated all the way back to the Napoleonic era. Since the robbery only lasted four minutes, they ended up dropping a crown that supposedly belong to Napoleon’s wife. In total, the amount of jewelry stolen is worth 88 million euros, or approximately 9,299,600 U.S. dollars.

The Louvre’s president and director, Laurence des Cars, has stated that the robbery has been an “immense wound”. The last robbery of the Louvre of such a huge scale happened all the way back in 1911, which is when the Mona Lisa was stolen. The robbers still haven’t been caught and we are all eagerly waiting to see what will happen next.
