The 2026 Winter Olympics are being held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. The opening ceremony is on February 6th. Most of the sports have to do with snow or ice, with it being in the winter. The sports are: Alpine Skiing, Bobsleigh, Curling, Ice Hockey, Luge, Skating (Figure, Speed, Short Track), Ski Mountaineering, Ski Jumping, Snowboarding, Freestyle Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing, Nordic Combined, Biathlon, and Skeleton.
First, some history. According to Brittanica, The winter Olympics started in 1901, but only included people from Sweden, and figure skating was added in 1908. In 1911, a member of the International Olympic Committee suggested that they include the winter sports in the upcoming Olympics or create a separate Winter Olympics. The Swedish first refused, but in the 1920 Olympics hosted in Belgium, the athletes would compete in figure skating and Ice hockey. Finally, in 1928 the first Winter Olympics as we know it was hosted.
