Yoga With Kinder and 1st Grade
Everyone may not know, but the Kindergartners and the First Graders are doing yoga to help keep their body healthy in a fun way. Every Monday their instructor, Ms. Kelly, comes and does yoga with them.
We got a chance to talk with Ms. Gonzales’s first grade class. A majority of the first graders liked yoga and said it was fun, but some did not because they do not like the poses stretches. Also, the first graders and the kindergartners shared some of their favorite poses and stretches when we spoke to them. The most popular stretches and poses were the butterfly stretch, warrior pose, and the tree pose. We were also informed that every time before they start yoga they play freeze dance, yoga style. The “dance” is freeze dance with special moves that helps them become better with yoga. A lot of the the kindergartners and the first graders seemed to really enjoy the yoga freeze dance. According to Jackson Simone and Sebastian Lebron in 1B “The dance is fun because it is like freeze tag.” It seems that the kindergartners and the first graders like yoga, and it is a great addition to what they do in their classrooms besides work.

It is so nice to hear that the kids are enjoying yoga with Miss Kelly. Did you know that yoga calms the mind and helps kids learn!! By holding specific postures and calm breathing the kids are learning tools to help them focus and settle their minds, which is very good for learning. The kids begin yoga with calming breaths and by repeating a mantra that meant “I respect myself and others”. Freeze Dance is fun and it is usually played at the end of class.
